I am an American working with the history of displacement in America. My work centers around the major historical events of displacement and migration within the United States’ borders. I.AM.US is an ongoing series that is the visualization of my research of these events. I use laser cutting to create intaglio, or depths,  into layered paper that is then collaged. Paper is the medium of much of humanity’s written history and I utilize it as the vehicle for my thought process. I am thinking about how this information has been historically framed and how I can disrupt that narrative with my own physical and metaphorical framing. In doing so, I am linking these historical events to contemporary happenings, but never explicitly. I am drawn to how these connections can change with the audience’s perception and how the ever-changing and increasingly volatile socio-political landscape can be continuously critiqued with uncovered histories.
Each piece is made by 9 x 12 in Bristol paper with a variable depth.
